Enea Deepens Strategic Alliance with Freescale

Companies to Jointly Develop Integrated Solutions for Networking Market

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, 26 April, 2010 – Enea (NASDAQ OMX Nordic:ENEA) today announced a strategic agreement with Freescale Semiconductor, a global leader in the design and manufacture of embedded semiconductors. Under the agreement Enea and Freescale will deepen their technical collaboration to integrate Enea's operating system family Enea OSE® with Freescale's QorIQ, PowerQUICC and StarCore processors.

Key components of the agreement include collaboration on technology roadmaps, sharing of intellectual property, and joint market and customer development.  End-to-end product alignment will be profound and start at the earliest stages of design and carrying through the entire device lifecycle.  The result will be broad portfolio coverage, available at or near first silicon as optimally tuned solutions that exploit the aspects of the processor's performance and features accessed through a powerful, easy to use software architecture.

"The depth of this agreement and its importance to the future of the communications industry can not be overstated" said Per Åkerberg, President and CEO of Enea.  "Our two companies have always had a strong relationship, but this opens up completely new opportunities with Freescale's current and future customer base. Our goal is to deliver state of art of platforms on which our customers can build the next generation of communications equipment."

"Freescale firmly believes that open, stable and thriving ecosystems are essential to accelerating innovation and preserving customer choice in embedded markets," said Raja Tabet, vice president of Software and Systems for Freescale's Networking and Multimedia Group. "Embedded multicore processors have become extremely advanced, requiring highly optimized software platforms and tools to unlock their full performance and energy efficiency capabilities. We believe the addition of these deep strategic alliances to our well-established ecosystem delivers what our customers need to leverage the full value of our highly sophisticated multicore processors."

Per Åkerberg concludes: "Customers are increasingly looking for pre-integrated processors and operating systems, a trend which is further supported by the latest consolidation in the industry. With this alliance we are taking another significant step forward in meeting that customer need."

Enea has a wide range of software support for applications like networking where multicore processors are emerging as the preferred computing solution:

  • The Enea OSE family of the realtime operating systems (RTOS) is the de facto standard for several network equipment categories including 3G base stations. Today, Enea OSE supports a broad range of PowerQUICC communications processors.  The latest edition to the line is the award-winning Enea OSE Multicore Edition which is available for the Freescale QorIQ family of multicore processors and includes specific optimizations for the P4080 Freescales Datapath Acceleration Architecture.

  • Enea® Hypervisor, announced in March this year, implements multiple high performance computing environments on top of multicore processors including the Freescale QorIQ P2020 communications platform. The Enea Hypervisor is based on OSE micro kernel technology and runs Enea OSE applications at native processor speeds without compromising any real-time critical properties, and takes as guests Linux Operating System (including Freescale's Linux implementation) and optionally semiconductor specific executive environments for bare-metal speed packet processing.

  • Enea OSE®ck, a high performance DSP operating system, and Enea® dSPEED, a framework for managing multicore DSPs support the Freescale MSC8144 and 815x DSPs.

  • Enea® LINX provides reliable, high-performance, interprocess communications services that make complex distributed systems easier to conceptualize, model, partition, and scale. Utilizing direct message passing, LINX is the only IPC technology that easily scales from DSPs and microcontrollers to CPUs

  • The Enea® Optima tool suite builds on the open source Eclipse(TM) Platform and C/C++ development tools technology and provides advanced system level browsing, debugging, profiling and analysis tools that greatly simplify the debugging and optimization of large-scale distributed applications spanning multiple processing engines.  Freescale support includes PowerQUICC, QorIQ and Freescale Starcore-based DSPs.  Enea Optima is integrated with the latest Eclipse-based Freescale CodeWarrior tools.

  • In addition, a broad array of Enea software products will also be available on Freescale communications processors and DSPs including Enea® Element, a high availability framework for building robust distributed applications, Polyhedra® in-memory database management system and the Enea Netbricks® line of telecommunications protocols.
