AdaptiveMobile Unveils the 10,000-Foot View of US SMS Spam

Dallas – December 4, 2013 – Enea AdaptiveMobile, the leader in mobile security, today issued an industry-first snapshot of SMS traffic across the United States, which shows ground-breaking visualizations of text messaging spam based on the mobile phone’s geographical location, as well as the industry’s first comprehensive map of the sources and targets of mobile spam in the United States. This two-month snapshot shows that mobile phones in South Florida, Dallas and Chicago were targeted with the highest levels of SMS spam. During this period, Los Angeles generated the most spam in the United States and was responsible for a pump-and-dump scam which “exploded” across the United States. South Florida was the next highest generator, hammering the Miami area with a “Junk Car” spam campaign.

In June, AdaptiveMobile reported that the availability of cheap databases of personal information, with $199 getting a list of 50,000 mobile subscribers broken out by first name and zip code, was a factor in an increase in SMS spam. This new data shows that where a person lives helps determine how much spam he/she receives in a year. Nearly every mobile user in Florida is targeted with at least one spam message each year; spammers direct schemes at one in three people in DC. In contrast, only one person in 20 is in line to receive mobile spam North Dakota, which has the lowest amount of SMS spam in the nation.

“This high-level view of all SMS spam across the United States for September and October is a powerful means in identifying the people most targeted by the messages as well as the areas generating the most amount of SMS spam,” said Cathal McDaid, Head of Security Operations at AdaptiveMobile. “We now know that where you live in the United States can determine how much SMS spam you can expect to receive each year. Having this level of detail will allow mobile operators to better combat the threat. In addition the visualizations give a stunning, unique view of both how mobile spam is sent and how mobile spam is evolving.”
