Managing New Network Security Risks in the Era of AI

How Deep Packet Inspection can close critical AI-IT visibility gaps and be used to build a solid foundation for advanced threat detection.

Securing the Network & Securing AI are One and the Same

Fueled by enterprise adoption of AI in general and the proliferation of agentic AI in particular, AI is being integrated into every connection and resource within IT networks, from endpoints to browsers to enterprise productivity suites to cloud infrastructure. This means that the mission of “securing the network” and “securing AI” are now one and the same.

Security, however, is still based on a siloed approach, treating IT and AI security as separate domains. The need to break these IT and AI security silos is urgent for three primary reasons:

  • AI adoption and enterprise penetration are increasing exponentially,
  • AI attacks are surging and evolving BUT the prime target remains conventional IT,
  • Agentic AI is expanding, multiplying the risks wherever AI and IT systems intersect.

The way to break the silos is through holistic, global visibility across AI and IT systems. This requires correlated AI and IT intelligence in real-time. And the technology capable of delivering this is deep packet inspection (DPI).

DPI Provides Global Network Visibility

As its name suggests, deep packet inspection analyzes network traffic to identify and classify the flows. DPI has long been used to gain in-depth insights into IT-based network entities and activities. It is now necessary for solution providers to also integrate it with AI products and components to gain the same in-depth, actionable insights and provide holistic network visibility. In addition, DPI can provide a highly scalable reality check on AI self-reporting that is too often unreliable, or uncorrelated with the IT ecosystems.

DPI is the Foundation for Advanced Threat Detection

In addition to network visibility, DPI also provides essential intelligence for threat detection. Using the correlated AI and IT intelligence, it can help identify suspicious network activity, deliver context for exploits and provide indicators of anomalous and evasive traffic, helping to reveal encrypted attacks. It can also play an invaluable role in the discovery of unsanctioned shadow AI usage.
