Freescale Semiconductor’s M68HC12 and HCS12 microcontrollers and Enea’s EE-Auto real-time software provide ideal platform for distributed automobile control
June 7, 2005, Stockholm – Enea today announced the availability of its EE-Auto real-time software platform for Freescale Semiconductor’s 16-bit microcontrollers, developed for the automotive industry.
Freescale’s HC12 microcontrollers (M68HC12 and HCS12) are used in a wide variety of automotive applications, including seat and mirror control systems, door modules, remote keyless entry systems, electronic four-wheel drive systems, and anti-theft systems. Freescale’s new microcontrollers, when equipped with Enea’s EE-Auto real-time software, gives automobile designers the compact, reliable, high-performance platform they need to cost effectively implement the increasingly sophisticated distributed electronic control systems found in modern automobiles.
“The EE-Auto platform for HC12 microcontrollers allows automotive suppliers and manufacturers to design advanced and robust control systems with multiple linked 16-bit controllers using the same RTOS kernel,” said says Nicklas Gustafson, product marketing manager at Enea. “The platform helps manufacturers shorten the time needed to develop, integrate and debug complex control software distributed across multiple processors.”
The EE-Auto platform combines OSE’s Epsilon RTOS with an easy to use development environment, distributed interprocess communications framework, and networking subsystem. The OSE Epsilon kernel is optimized for high-performance, resource-constrained applications. Written entirely in assembler, OSE Epsilon features pre-emptive, priority-based task scheduling with a context switching speed of less than 300 nsec, occupies as little as 2 kbytes of RAM, provides integrated error handling, and features a worst-case interrupt latency of 1 usec.
The 68HC12 Family is based on Freescale's CPU12, a high-speed 16-bit evolution of the 68HC11 architecture core. Complementing this core is an array of on-board peripherals such as memory, timers, analog-to-digital converters, flash memory, and communications interfaces such as CAN (Control Area Network). The 68HC12’s high performance, integrated memory, and versatile I/O architecture makes it ideal for a broad range of automobile control applications.
Development support for OSE Epsilon running on HCS12 processors includes the IAR Embedded Workbench, which features a C/C++ compiler and an OSE-aware C-Spy debugger. Enea’s also offers its own OSE Soft Kernel simulator, which allows designers to develop and test their code on a PC without the need for the target hardware.
Price and availability
EE-Auto is available immediately for HC12 processors. Pricing starts at $ 8000 for a 1-10 developer’s seat.
