How ARM's Ecosystem Drives NFV Transformation

The original vision for network functions virtualization (NFV), issued in the October 2012 white paper by a group of network service providers, was to move away from purpose-built, dedicated hardware platforms to a more generic commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, running network functions rewritten as virtual network functions (VNFs) in software on top of a virtualization platform.

With the evolution of network infrastructure, the essential ideas are now being realized. This is in part due to the industry's commitment to simultaneously move to an open source collaborative development model. But certain realities are also driving an evolving vision of the original concept. ARM, together with its ecosystem partners, such as Enea, is delivering innovation in hardware, software and professional services in order to help operators navigate the transition to the cloud in support of NFV.

In this whitepaper you will find

  • an overview of the diverse nature of telco workloads and explanations of how this impacts the requirements for the physical hardware used to support them.
  • a discussion on the impact of cloud delivery models in the networks.
  • highlighting of industry consortiums and their respective roles in delivering the innovation and interoperability that operators seek in their NFV solutions.
  • an example of how Enea assists operators in their NFV transformation journey through a combination of software and professional services.
